The Dirt | Grand Oaks native planting event - volunteers needed!
The Grand Oaks neighborhood in Corvallis is hosting its second annual event on Saturday afternoon, March 2 to help restore the native plant community in natural areas, and we need volunteers. Help us plant about 100 small native shrubs and trees in areas previously cleared and prepared for planting. We will also cut protective netting from last year’s plantings, as well as move some cut tree-trunk rounds to use as seats in the newly planted areas.
Over the last 3 years, we have worked to remove and control spreading, choking invasive plants that overwhelmed our treasured ancient oaks and other native plants in two initial demonstration areas. Last year, OSU students and other volunteers helped us with our first native replanting. Those plantings were very successful, and we will do some maintenance work on them this year. We will also plant a new area. This is the next step implementing our greenspace vegetation management plan (VMP), which was developed by neighborhood volunteers, approved by our homeowners Board and the City of Corvallis in 2018. (Refer to Landscape Committee section on the Grand Oaks HOA website: www.grandoakscorvallis.com for the VMP and greenspace strategic plan.)
We would like to have a group of up to 25 people who can work 'off-trail' in a natural area. We will be digging holes and planting seedlings and potted plants. Volunteers will be briefed on site history, restoration planning and implementation, and planting techniques. We would love to have you join us. Please be prepared for the weather (probably wet) and possibly muddy conditions. This event will take place rain or shine!
