Charlene Carroll
Charli was a past resident and co-owner of almost 20 acres in Wren, just 7 miles outside Philomath. Initially the plan was to farm grapes or trees, but finding the land had a very large population of Fender’s blue butterfly and Kincaid Lupine changed all that.
Lupine seed pods were donated to Kings Valley School to grow to plant elsewhere. ODW and county assistance was obtained in restoring the property, stewarding a new pond to allow butterflies to mud bathe, etc. A Conservation plan was written up with Institute of applied ecology, who did research plots. So many volunteers and organizations were involved. So much coordination. Lots of native plantings were completed, adding to abundant natural huge white oaks, and patches of chocolate and deer lily, larkspur and cats ear etc.
Charli has always loved the outdoors, hiking, nature, environment and ecology. She volunteers with Salmon Watch and sat on the BSWCD budget committee. She plants native drought tolerant plants purchased from BSWCD at the new home in the city of Corvallis. Always the mission of BSWCD is near and dear to her.
She is retired now, formerly an internal medicine physician who has lived in the Willamette valley for over 40 years. She was in primary care, at OSU student health, the medical director of the Benton community health clinics, and most recently a hospitalist, teaching new physician residents and medical students.
She loves nature, and wants a role in preserving and enhancing the environment.
